Back before I was a Tampa wedding photographer, I was just a kid who absolutely loved writing and telling stories. As I became older I unfortunately didn’t spend as much time of my free time writing. I was in my mid-20’s when I started to develop a love for photography. I bought a camera and started taking pictures for fun. There I was, going from knowing nothing about photography to being out every weekend meeting up with other photographers to capture pictures. I also spent a great deal of time and teaching myself how to use the expensive DSLR I had bought. Thank goodness for YouTube, amirite?! I never really thought my hobby of photography would be anything more than just that: a hobby. I didn’t think anyone would even want to look at my photos, let alone pay me for them.
Fast forward a little bit and I was engaged and on the hunt for a wedding photographer in Tampa. When looking for one, I had a couple of non-negotiables. I wanted a photographer to be able to capture my fiancé and I’s unique love story in a natural and authentic way; I SO did not want those cheesy, overdone wedding photos. Additionally, I definitely wanted my photographer to feel more like a friend than a vendor. I wanted someone my fiancé and I would feel totally comfortable with in front of the camera. It was then that it clicked for me (pun intended) that I could marry my love for photography and storytelling into one by becoming a wedding photographer. I loved telling stories, I loved photography and I loved meeting new people and making new friends.
So, there I was, working as a Tampa wedding photographer, joining together my first love: storytelling with my second: photography and it could not have been a more perfect fit. Seriously, what job allows you to join together two of your passions while also meeting awesome people? Can someone say DREAM JOB?! I love waking up every day knowing that I get to provide amazing couples with one of the best wedding gifts of all: beautiful images of their love that they can look back on in fifty years and remember exactly how they felt on their wedding day. In addition to this, I absolutely love all the additional components of weddings: beautiful flower arrangements, stunning wedding gowns and unique wedding venues.
Now, I know what you might be thinking: “Melissa, doesn’t it get boring photographing so many weddings?” or “Isn’t every wedding the same thing?” And while the categories of components (flowers, dresses, etc) are the mostly the same, the actual components are as unique as the couples themselves and that never gets old! And, at the end of the day, when I hear from a couple “your photos made us cry” or “you captured our love perfectly”, it is a sense of fulfillment like no other. Its the blend of art and storytelling that brought me to wedding photography and the fulfillment and joy I bring to couples that keeps me here.
